On Thursday we went down to the Baptist church to have a look at an art display. When we got back we wrote a little story. We might try to finish it off during our independent writing this week.

Awesome Art Adventure

Room K and Room N went adventuring
One chilly morning.
Down the road, passed the pool,
Over the Bridge, around the library
And into the church.
Where they found …
A fabulous forest of art.
Hiding in the trees they saw
Magical art of every kind.
Paintings, paper mache, dioramas, reused things and 3 Dimensional amazing animals.

Some of Room N's Mummy Recounts

The Mummified Fish
First we dried the pilchard with a paper towel.  After that we filled the fish body with baking soda.  Next we put baking soda into the zip up bag.    I felt like I was going to hurl.  After a week, we brushed the fish.  The baking soda had been taking the moisture out of the fish body.  We did it over and over again.  At the end we had mummified fish.

Mummified Fish
First we dried the fish with paper towels.  Next we put baking soda in the cavity.  Then we filled the bag with baking soda.  We put the fish in the bag.  The next week, we got the fish out of the bag.  Next we put new baking soda in the fish and baking soda in the bag.  Then we put the fish back in the bag.  We did it the same the following weeks.  At last the fish was all wrinkly and hard.

Eggs!!!

On Friday, Mr Harris brought his eggcelent egg collection to school.  There were eeny squeeny eggs to humongously huge eggs.  There was even a green egg.  Mrs Bing thought it was an avocado egg.  But she forgot that only birds (some reptiles and two mammals) lay eggs.  Trees definitely don't lay eggs.

Little Miss Muffett

Little Miss Muffet
Little Miss Muffet
Sat on her tuffet,
Eating her irish stew
Along came a spider
And sat down beside her-
So she ate him up too.

Mummified Fish Finale

We have finished with the Mummified Fish.  What an interesting and SMELLY experiment.  We had to change the baking soda twice.  The first time we changed the baking soda the fish were still soft but the baking soda was quite clumpy.  It was interesting to see what had changed. The eyeballs had sunken into the head.  The next time we changed the soda the fish were a lot stiffer but the soda was not as clumpy.

On Friday we took them out of the bags for the last time.  The baking soda was still free flowing - quite different to the first change.  The fish sounded solid when we tapped them.  The were stiff.  One fish had curled into a u shape.

We know that the Baking Soda had sucked all the moisture out of the fish and because there was no moisture in the fish they didn't rot.  It was an interesting smell - The fish didn't smell rotten but a concentrated fish smell.

Hopefully the classroom will smell a lot better now.  The plastic bags did not stop the smell escaping.

Thanks for sharing our fun experiment Room O.

How Do Birds Eat?

Mark wanted to know how birds eat when they don't have teeth.

We found out that they have a gizzard.  When a bird eats the food travel down into the crop (where it is stored) and then it moved onto the gizzard.  When the food is in the gizzard it gets ground up.  Birds eat little stones which are stored in the gizzard.  The stones do the job of the teeth.  It is all very clever.

Mark and Ethan worked together to great their own gizzard.  The used pliers to open some sunflower seeds. Next they soaked the kernels for 20 minutes.  Once the kernels were soft, they were put in a plastic bag with a few stones (from the fish tank) and rubbed the bag between their hands for a couple of minutes.   When they had finished, we could see that the kernels were broken up and the little bit of water that was in the bag was all cloudy.

Now we all know how birds eat without teeth.  Keep asking great questions, Mark.

Weekend with Summer

Q Bear had another great weekend.  He loved playing with Summer and Jake.

He is hiding in on of the photos.  Can you find him?

Riley's Egg

Riley brought a shell-less egg to school. It was really fascinating to look at; we could see the yolk. The yolk moved around the egg. It always floated to the top.

Riley told us how it was made. Her Gran put a normal egg in vinegar for a few days and the shell dissolved. It was really clever. I wonder what else we could put in vinegar? Have a think and let us know.

Enviro Day

We had a great Enviro day.  While four students worked with Ethan's mum making our garden sculpture, the rest of the class went to our garden and put some much needed mulch around the plants.
Once we finished there we collected some leaves so we could make some hedgehogs.
We had fun making out kiwifruit birds.  After lunch we played games - the Enviro Team and Green Team were great.  They organised great games.

A big THANK YOU to everyone who helped make the day AWESOME.

Well done.  Keep up the fantastic Rainbow learning.

Weekend with Thomas

Fish Mummies

We can make our own mummies.  Pilchards are the fish of choice.  We needed a small fish or the whole process will take too long.  Mrs Bing cleaned and gutted the fish.  Then it was up to us to carefully dry them.  If we were not careful the fish would start to fall to pieces.  The instructions said that the fish needed to be scaled.  But because they had been frozen, the fish were very delicate and we didn't want to damage them.  Once the fish were dry we opened them up and put baking soda inside.  Then we put them in a plastic bag with lots of baking soda.  We hope they don't smell when we get back to school on Tuesday.  Next Thursday we need to take the fish out of the bags and change the baking soda.  We might need nose pegs.
