Fox Glacier

We found out where we can go and see Fox Glacier.  We learnt that it is a river of ice that is 13km long.

Because it is hard to imagine how far 13km is we measured our school field.  The field is about 100 meters long.  That means we would have to walk up and down the field 130 times.
The field we measured was 70 meters wide.

The Fox Glacier cover 36 square km.  Would need over 5,000 of our school fields to cover it.

It is amazing to think that a glacier is a moving river of ice.

In 1966 scientists thought there were 370 glaciers in  New Zealand, but in the 1980's there was a systematic count of glaciers in New Zealand and there are  3,100.  There are even glaciers on Mt Ruapehu.  One of glacier can be found inside the crater.  Imagine that a glacier inside the crater of an active volcano.

Next time you drive along the desert road keep an eye out - you might be able to spot one of the 18 glaciers.

Mark's Independent Story - the Jungle Animals

The jungle animals

Chapter 1 - The Jungle Animals
In the jungle there lived a monkey, lion, tiger, giraffe and eagle.  In midday Giraffe was munching on leaves on the apple tree.  Tiger said, “May I have a ride on your back?”
“Yes,” replied Giraffe.
“I will hop on your back and stay still,’ said Tiger.  Just when Tiger was on his back, Eagle darted down and landed on Giraffe’s head.  Up ahead there was something boney with meat.  What was it?

Chapter 2 -Kill for Eagle
It was a trap that a hunter had set.  In the bushes there was someone watching the trap.  It was the hunter.  Lion came to help them. Then lion leapt on the bushes.  Then the hunter said, “That lion can’t catch me.  Can’t catch me.”
BANG

“I missed.  Now the lion can catch me.” Then the Lion ate the hunter up.  Tiger jumped off giraffe and walked off to Rhino's house.  Monkey thought he would be smart and drop a coconut on Tiger’s head from a tree.  So he did drop in on his head.

Chapter 3 - Coconut for everyone
The next minute Lion found a box of salt that was as hot as the sun.  10 seconds later Lion was very smart and built a slingshot.  He put the box of salt on the slingshot and ...
...flung it in a weird direction and hit Monkey on the head.  Then Tiger had an idea.  He said, “Let’s have a party of coconut.  We’ll have coconut cake with coconut drink.”  Rhino cheered out to Lion and said, “Come have a party.”  So Lion came running.

Chapter 4 - The party finishes
Lion was so hungry he ate all of the cake and drink.  “You ruined it,” they all shouted in Lion’s face.  So he sprinted off to his slingshot and flung a little tree and hit them.
OUCH
They screamed like a baby.  Then they sprang to their feet and chased Lion.  Lion had to scamper until he had a plan.

Chapter 5 - A scary monster
“Great plan,”  Lion said in excitement.  So he ran like a cheetah to his house and got his monster suit.  Then he stomped as loud as anything.  He stomped after Rhino, Tiger and Eagle.  They were terrified when they saw Lion’s monster suit.

Chapter 6 - A great game
Then Lion said, “Its only me.”
“A trick,” cried Rhino, Tiger and Eagle.  All of a sudden…
BANG  CRASH
Giraffe came out of the bushes.  “Why are you fighting?” asked Giraffe.
“We are playing,” they said.
“Play nicely,” Giraffe said.
“OK.  Shall we play hide and seek?” said Lion.
“I’ll be in,” Monkey said from up in a high tree up above them.  “Ten seconds to hide,” cried Monkey.

Chapter 7 - A scary spider
Rhino hid in the ditch. Eagle hid in the tree.  Lion walked into the forest, but...
... he got tired and fell asleep on the ground.  Giraffe went to hide behind a tree.  Tiger hid in the reedy grass.  Then all of a sudden…
AAHHH
screamed Rhino, just as Monkey said, “Ten.”  Rhino jumped out of the ditch and warned the others screaming,  “Th-th-ere’s-ere’s  a-a  s-p-p-ider.”
WAHHHH  they cried.
